Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to speak other languages?
NO, English and a smile will be most appreciated.
I don’t know anything about the sea. Is that ok?
Absolutely, this Centre is meant to be a “home away from home”!

Do I really need photo ID?
YES, you will not be allowed inside the Port without a driver’s licence, passport, or something similar. This is an international law.

Do I have to be religious?
At least one volunteer host must be Christian, as most seafarers recognize the Mission to Seafarers as a Christian ministry, and they may come with questions, or seeking fellowship. In these cases, any host with other beliefs must immediately defer to the Christian.

Who is in charge?
This mission is administered by a committee chaired by Rev’d Charles Tyrrell, and is an inter-denominational outreach of local churches. Milo Coldren is currently the Acting Manager.

Who pays for it?
Operational funding for the first year is donated by the Anglican Church. Support is sought from others who are concerned for the welfare of seafarers, some of whom do not see their families for up to two years at a time. Port Nelson Ltd. donated most of the money for the remodel.

How can I help?
We would love for you to host an evening or two a month at the centre, but you can also help by spreading the word. Because the Centre is located behind the security fence, and few people can see the conditions under which the seafarers work, it will take a lot of people like you to help raise awareness in Nelson. Of course, the biggest need is for prayer!

What do you need?
There is an ongoing need for recent publications in various languages, books, hospitality items (coffee, tea, snacks). Check with the office for current needs.
